Driving the Italian Road

Visions

It’s a manicured country, as if a greenskeeper was in charge of an entire peninsula. Trees planted long ago according to the whims of the local dukes and ruling aristocracy. Even the autostrada offers wonderful views as long as you can ignore the angry faces tailgating you in your rear view. Continue reading

Staring Drivers

Anyone who’s driven a motor vehicle near a crowded metropolis knows this situation: someone makes a turn or drives past you and stares at you the whole time.  Their blank face judging you, wondering why you are such an idiot, and thanking the stars above that they are not you.  This is one of the most annoying, road rage inducing acts a driver can do.  It offers a sense of superiority to the moving vehicle as they blankly, disapprovingly watch you as they pass.  I don’t know what it is about watching their stupid faces as they pass by.  Perhaps it is that I am watching them and allowing myself to be brought into human drama, perhaps it is the evolutionary remnant of our primeval selves who know if someone looks into your eyes, they are trying to steal your wife and children, or perhaps it’s just that I hate somebody thinking they’re better than me.  After all, they are the ones who are going first; they will make the turn or go through the stop sign ahead of you.  Please, do not tell me I am the only one on this pet peeve.  It is a normal part of life for people to stare, but with the anonymity and power one feels behind the wheel, it can make the normal person crazy, cross and irritated.  I really hate it when it is a bigger car than mine.  Then, they not only look at you, but down at you.  It doesn’t matter if you are a hot chick or a goofy hipster or a grandma, you piss me off if you stare at me while driving.
